Lymphatic Drainage

WHAT IS MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD, is a very gentle, hands-on therapy that helps your body’s lymphatic system work more effectively.

Your lymphatic system plays a key role in removing waste and excess fluid from your tissues. When it’s not moving efficiently, you might notice puffiness, heaviness, bloating or general sluggishness, things that don’t always respond to exercise or diet alone.

MLD uses slow, precise techniques to encourage natural fluid movement. It can help reduce swelling, ease tension, support circulation and leave you feeling lighter, more comfortable and more in tune with your body.

WHAT TO EXPECT

It’s a subtle therapy. You won’t feel strong pressure or stretching, but its effects can be noticeable. Over time, regular sessions can support your body to function more efficiently.

One thing I’ll always do is share simple ways to support the benefits between treatments. That's how I got into this and genuinely enjoy showing people how some simple, self managed techniques can make a difference.

MLD is for anyone who wants to feel better in their body, whether that is easing discomfort, improving recovery, or simply restoring a sense of balance and flow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • MLD is a very gentle, hands-on therapy that helps your lymphatic system move fluid and waste more efficiently. It can reduce swelling, ease feelings of heaviness, and help you feel lighter and more comfortable in your body.

  • Many of the videos online focus on sculpting, Brazilian or bamboo-based lymphatic massage. These are much more vigorous techniques designed to move fluid quickly.

The more classical version of MLD works differently. The treatment focuses on opening and supporting the entire lymphatic system so it can drain and flow properly. The technique is slow and rhythmic, designed for longer-lasting effects rather than an immediate dramatic change.

Fluid still moves during treatment, but many people notice the biggest difference in the hours or days following the session.

  • Unlike traditional massage, MLD is slow, very gentle and precise. It works with the lymphatic system rather than muscles, so it doesn’t rely on pressure or deep tissue work.

Massage helps relax muscles and relieve tension, while MLD focuses on supporting fluid movement and circulation.

  • Sessions generally last between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on whether you choose a targeted treatment or a full body session.

  • This depends on your needs and how much support you provide your body between sessions. As a general guide, many people benefit from one or two sessions per month.

I will always discuss what may work best for you and share simple tips to help maintain the benefits at home.

  • Comfortable clothing that’s easy to change in and out of is best. For most treatments the work is done directly on the skin, but you will always be covered appropriately for comfort and privacy. The process of MLD is done without any oil. I personally like to finish the treatment with a very light brush stroke massage to get fluid moving and if you'd like this, massage oil will be used.

  • Most people can benefit from MLD, but there are certain situations where it may not be suitable, such as pregnancy, some circulatory conditions or acute illness.

I will ask about your medical history before treatment to ensure it is safe for you. I do not currently provide pre- or post-operative MLD.

  • No. MLD is extremely gentle. You may feel light pressure and rhythmic movement on the skin, but it should never be painful.

  • Some people notice a difference after one session, often feeling lighter or less puffy. The benefits can also build over time, so regular sessions may lead to longer-lasting improvements.

  • Yes. MLD can complement massage, skincare treatments and other therapies.

During an MLD session, deep or pressured massage is avoided because strong pressure can temporarily compress lymphatic vessels. This is why the treatments are usually done separately to allow the lymphatic system to work effectively.

  • Some people notice increased urination, mild fatigue or feeling lighter in the hours following treatment. These effects are usually temporary and part of the body adjusting. Gurgling in your stomach during the session or a need to wee straight after is abaolsutely normal - so don't worry - I actually love that to happen as a nod to the treatment working at it's best!

  • Simple habits can help maintain the benefits of treatment. Staying hydrated, moving regularly and following any advice I provide about supporting lymphatic flow can all help.
